FIRST READING:
Sir. 35: 12-14, 16-19 "The prayer of the humble will penetrate the heavens." The Lord does not ignore the devotion of the downtrodden.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM:
Ps. 34 "This poor man called: the Lord heard him."
SECOND READING:
2 Tim. 4: 6-9, 16-18 "All that remains is the crown of righteousness reserved for me."
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:
2 Cor. 5: 19 "God was in Christ, to reconcile the world to himself; and the Good News of reconciliation he has entrusted to us."
GOSPEL: Lk. 18: 9-14
"The publican returned to his home justified; the Pharisee did not."
Jesus tells the parable of the prideful Pharisee and the humble tax collector.
FOCUS: Sincerity in our love of God is essential lest we succumb to the kind of pride in which we judge others but fail to examine ourselves.
REFLECTION: "Blessed is the servant who esteems himself no better when he is exalted by people than when he is considered worthless, simple, and despicable; for what a man is before God, that he is and nothing more." St. Francis of Assissi
"There is no need to be afraid of illusion. It overtakes those who become vain, who begin to think that as soon as warmth has come into the heart they are already at the summit of perfection. In fact this warmth is only the beginning and may not prove stable. For this warmth and peace in the heart may just be something natural-the fruit of concentrated attention. We have to labour and labour, to wait and wait." Theophane the Recluse
"He said, again : Malice will never drive out malice. But if someone does evil to you, you should do good work to him so that by your good work you may destroy his malice."
Sayings of the Desert Fathers
APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: Introduce the liturgy by asking people to enter into the prayer of the Mass with humility. In baptism we were given the humility of Christ. Through our resurrection in humility and his resurrection in life we have been opened to God's threshold.
Sprinkling rite or
Penitential rite: Third form with sixth or eighth set of sample invocations
Opening Prayer: Alternate with invitatory
General Intercessions-
Introduction: My sisters and brothers, let us offer our prayers to God, who transforms our lives through Jesus Christ.
· For the Church of God: that we will joyfully proclaim and live our faith in the humility of Christ;
· For peace and well-being of the whole world, that God's gift to us in this life be realized in the simple life;
· For those who suffer from hunger, sickness, or loneliness: that those who are last now will be first in the richness of God;
· For our community and our families, who welcome Christ into their lives: that they learn to receive him in the poor and humble people of this world.
Preface: Second preface in Ordinary time
Eucharistic Prayer: fourth
Prayers over the people: tenth
or
Solemn Blessing in Ordinary time: Third
Faith Formation
True devotion to God is more than saying words. Disposition of the heart is what counts. The Pharisee in today's gospel was a God-fearing, church-going man.
· Where did he go wrong?
Beware of the "us and them" syndrome. Being members of a group may lead us to pride, and even hatred, if we don't guard against it. We must not hold ourselves separate from any of God's creations.
· In what ways do you separate yourself from others?
· How does one guard against spiritual pride?
Children's Liturgyof the Word
Listening to God: Be quiet and listen to God, for just a few seconds. Keep your eyes open and breathe. Straighten your back. Listen. Doesn't it make you happy? Don't you just feel like smiling? God makes us happy. Doing what He wants us to do makes the happiness last. What does God want you to do? If we do what God wants us to do, we will be happy even when we aren't happy (laughter).
After reading the gospel, discuss the Pharisee's thinking. When we think too much about ourselves or our own importance we don't have time to love each other.
