APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: Introduce the liturgy by asking people to enter into the prayer of the Mass with humility. In baptism we were given the humility of Christ. Through our resurrection in humility and his resurrection in life we have been opened to God's threshold.

Introduction: My sisters and brothers, let us offer our prayers to God, who transforms our lives through Jesus Christ.

· For the Church of God: that we will joyfully proclaim and live our faith in the humility of Christ;

· For peace and well-being of the whole world, that God's gift to us in this life be realized in the simple life;

· For those who suffer from hunger, sickness, or loneliness: that those who are last now will be first in the richness of God;

· For our community and our families, who welcome Christ into their lives: that they learn to receive him in the poor and humble people of this world.

True devotion to God is more than saying words. Disposition of the heart is what counts. The Pharisee in today's gospel was a God-fearing, church-going man.

· Where did he go wrong?

Beware of the "us and them" syndrome. Being members of a group may lead us to pride, and even hatred, if we don't guard against it. We must not hold ourselves separate from any of God's creations.

· In what ways do you separate yourself from others?

· How does one guard against spiritual pride?

Children's Liturgyof the Word

Listening to God: Be quiet and listen to God, for just a few seconds. Keep your eyes open and breathe. Straighten your back. Listen. Doesn't it make you happy? Don't you just feel like smiling? God makes us happy. Doing what He wants us to do makes the happiness last. What does God want you to do? If we do what God wants us to do, we will be happy even when we aren't happy (laughter).

After reading the gospel, discuss the Pharisee's thinking. When we think too much about ourselves or our own importance we don't have time to love each other.
