The day is coming when the conceited and evildoers will perish. RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Ps. 98 "The Lord comes to rule the peoples with fairness." SECOND READING: 2 Thess. 3: 7-12 "If anyone refuses to work then do not let them eat." GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: Lk. 21: 28 "Lift up your heads and see; your redemption is near at hand." GOSPEL: Lk. 21: 5-19 "Your endurance will win you your life." Jesus speaks of a time when nation will rise up against nation. FOCUS: We know not the hour when the Son of Man will return. Upon his arrival there will be peace and mercy for all. REFLECTION: "He suffers the greatest persecution of all who lives under none. A storm puts a man on his guard and obliges him to exert his utmost efforts to avoid shipwreck." St. Jerome "Be patient in trials, watchful in prayer, and never cease working. Be considerate in your speech, well-orderd in your actions and grateful to your benefactors. Remember, for all this an eternal kingdom is being made ready for you." St. Francis of Assisi "The life of a Christian on earth is a chain of suffering. It is necessary to fight against our own body, against passions and evil spirits. Our hope lies in this fight. Our salvation is from God. Having put our reliance on Him, we must bear with patience the time of struggle. We are ground between the millstones of temptation as grain that is ground into flour. Divine Providence permits these trials to assail us for the great benefit of our soul; from them we acquire a contrite and humble heart which God will not despise." Bishop Ignatii APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: Introduce the liturgy by saying there can be no delay in the practising of our faith. We are not to worry about when the end times will be. Rather, we are to live up to our life's potential by exercising our faith and being active witnesses to the truth. Introduce the breaking of the bread by proclaiming the Eucharist to be the "sun of righteousness that shines out with healing rays, that infuses us with strength to remain faithful until his return." Sprinkling rite or Penitential rite: Third form with second set of sample invocations General Intercessions Introduction: Let us pray with hu-mility, simplicity and confidence to God our Father, who is in our midst and lives among us: · For the holy Church of God: that the Lord guide and protect it, · For all peoples of the world: that the Lord unite them in peace and harmony, · For all our sisters and brothers in need: that the Lord assist them, · That our community may have the faith and strength to bear witness to Christ's presence. Preface: Sixth preface in Ordinary Time The Lord's Prayer: See fourth sample invitation Prayers over the people: First or sixteenth or Solemn Blessing in Ordinary time: Fourth or fifth. Faith Formation The liturgical year begins and ends with the Second Coming. We end the year meditating on the implications of the end times. We begin the year with proclaiming our ultimate destiny, which became known through the incarnation, will come to fruition through the Second Coming. · Does your desire for baptism tell you that God wants you to do something? Is that desire really God's grace leading you to be a witness to His word, His teachings? · What does it mean to be a witness for the gospel? We are called to be witnesses in many different ways. It is up to us to look and listen carefully to discern what God wants of us, then do it. How do we know we are seeing and hearing God, and not deluding ourselves? If God tells you to be kind and loving, that's God. If he tells you anything else, you've got the wrong number. Try again. Children's Liturgy of the Word Jesus said that people will come with big promises. Many things offered in life are tempting but none except God provides lasting happiness. The psalm today speaks of rivers clapping their hands and hills ringing for joy at the coming of the Lord. True happiness comes not from things but from our hearts, from being kind to each other, and seeking God in our lives.
