FIRST READING:
Ecclesiastes 1: 2; 2: 21-23 What does all their labor profit them? All is vanity and life is fleeting.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Ps.95 "O that today you would listen to his voice! Harden not your hearts."
SECOND READING:
Col. 3:1-5, 9-11 Seek the things that are above, where Christ is.
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:
Mt. 5: 3 "Happy are the poor in spirit; the kingdom of heaven is theirs!"
GOSPEL: Lk. 12: 13-21
"Why are you preparing these things?" Jesus tells the parable of the rich man with a good harvest.
FOCUS: "Watch, and be on your guard against avarice of any kind."
We are to seek lasting treasures and the wealth that is the gift of God. We must be careful to avoid greed and materialism in all its forms.
REFLECTION: "Even though the poor are often rough and unrefined, we must not judge them from external appearances nor from the mental gifts they have received. On the contrary, if you consider the poor in the light of faith, then you will observe that they are taking the place of the Son of God who chose to be poor. Although in his passion he almost lost the appearance of a man and was considered a fool by the Gentiles and a stumbling block to the Jews, he showed them that his mission was to preach to the poor." St. Vincent de Paul
"A shadow's shadow, a world of shadow (Eccles. 1; 2)-nothing matters except loving God."
Thomas à Kempis
"Many people understand about the ultimate effects of illusion, for
these are clearly manifest. What is more important is to learn how this illusion arises. It starts from a false thought, which serves as the foundation of all the delusions and all the disastrous infirmities that afflict the soul. A false thought in the mind already contains the whole structure of illusion, just as a seed sown in the earth contains the whole plant which grows out of it."
Theophane the Recluse
APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: All that is of value in this life comes from God and is given freely. It is up to us to rid ourselves of the greed and avarice that prevent us from seeing and feeling God's grace. Introduce the Lord's Prayer by saying that Jesus taught us to pray simply and to appeal directly to our Father who is the source of all. Introduce the breaking of the bread by proclaiming that this is the bread that disrupts our sense of security in worldy possessions.
General Intercessions-
Introduction: My brothers and sisters, God is the source of eternal nourishment. Let us offer our prayers to God, whose gifts are without limits:
· For the Church of God, that we will joyfully proclaim and live our faith in Christ the eternal gift from God;
· For peace and well-being of the whole world, that God's gift to us in this life will lead us to salvation in the life to come;
· For those who suffer from hunger, sickness, or loneliness, that the gift of Christ's presence bring them health and peace;
· For our community and our families, who welcome Christ into their lives: that they learn to receive him in the poor and suffering people of this world.
Prayers over the People: 15
or
Solemn Blessing: 5 of solemn blessing in Ordinary Time
Faith Formation
Today's gospel reading leads us to examine our priorities and values. We will soon pass away like everyone else. But we needn't fear because we are baptized in the Lord. Baptism is a covenant between us and God. It is like a marriage contract where both parties give themselves to each other. We give ourselves to God by striving to live in the light of God' word, and God gives us eternal life.
· What are your most important priorities?
· How does greed affect your spiritual life?
· What does God ask of you?
Make the connection that our participation at Sunday liturgy is the wellspring from which we can properly assess our values.
Song suggestions:
Keep in Mind (Deiss) BB/MI, PMB, WCH
Just a Closer Walk with Thee PMB, WW
Children's Liturgy of the Word
Recount the story of King Midas and his golden touch, a tale which demonstrates tragedy of greed.
· What is the difference between wanting things and being greedy?
· In what ways does having too many things affect you?
· How does God help us to keep from being greedy?
One way to learn is from others. We learn from Jesus how to love and be merciful. We learn from God that we should give freely becauseGod gives freely.
