FIRST READING: Amos. 6: 1, 4-7 "You who give yourselves to licentiousness and revelry will be exiled."
The Lord said: "Woe to those who think themselves safe and snug."
RESPONSORIAL PSALM:
Ps. 146 "My soul, give praise to the Lord."
SECOND READING:
1 Tim. 6: 11-16 "Obey the commandments until the coming of the Lord. "
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:
2 Cor. 8: 9 "Jesus Christ was rich but he became poor, to make you rich out of his poverty."
GOSPEL: Lk. 16: 19-31
"During your life good things came your way but bad things came the way of Lazarus. Now he is being comforted while you are in agony."
Jesus tells the Pharisees the parable of the rich man and Lazarus.
FOCUS: "If they will not listen to Moses or the prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone should rise from the dead." It is essential that we accept and respond to the faith we receive from God.
REFLECTION: "We must come to see that peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal. We must pursue peaceful ends through peaceful means." Martin Luther King, Jr.
"I am greatly troubled and vexed in my spirit; for we wear the habit and have the name of saints, and boast of this before unbelievers. And I fear lest the word of Paul be fulfilled in us which says, 'having the form of godliness but denying the power thereof'." St. Anthony of Egypt
"Illusion acts in one way, and God in another-God the unlimitable Master of man, who was and is now their Creator. He who created and re-creates, does He not remain always the Creator? Therefore, beloved brother, listen how the action of illusion differs from divine action. Illusion, when it approaches man in thought or dream, in some subtle idea, by some apparition which can be seen with the physical eyes, or by a voice from on high heard by the physical ears, never approaches as an absolute master, but comes as a charmer who seeks acceptance by man, and from his acceptance gains power over him. The action of illusion inside or outside man is always action from without; it is open to man to repel it. Illusion is always met at first by a certain doubt in the heart: only those whom it has conquered decisively accept it without question. Illusion never unites a man who is divided by sin, it does not stop the upsurge of blood, does not lead the ascetic to repentance, does not make him small in his own eyes; on the contrary it fires his imagination, encourages the rush of blood, brings him a certain tasteless, poisonous enjoyment, and flatters him insidiously, inspiring him with self-conceit and establishing in his soul an idol."
Ý St. Gregory of Sinai
APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: Introduce the liturgy by saying we cannot wait for some miraculous event to inspire us to action, we must act on the faith we receive. As a community we need to ask, "Are we too comfortable, reclining on our couches, listening but not hearing?"
Sprinkling rite or
Penitential rite: Fourth or sixth form with second set of sample invocations
General Intercessions-
Introduction: Gathered together in Christ, as brothers and sisters, let us recognize the voice of Lazarus in our lives and ask God to hear our prayers.
·That pastors may lead in faith and serve in love the flock entrusted to their care by Christ the Good Shepherd,
· That the whole world may experience true peace, the peace only possible through the Divine Love of Christ,
· That our suffering sisters and brothers may have their sorrow turned to joy,
· That our community may have the faith and strength to bear witness to the gospel.
Eucharistic Prayer: 4
Prayers over the People: 4
Solemn Blessing in Ordinary time: Fourth
Faith Formation
Scripture has tremendous power in bringing us closer to God. Reflect on today's gospel.
· What does the gospel mean to you?
· What particular passage, phrase, or idea stays in your mind?
· How do you see scripture affecting your life?
Children's Liturgy of the Word
Ask the children to think of a time when they got the help they really needed.
· How did that make them feel?
Scripture teaches that God asks us to care for each other, to pay attention to the needs of others and to respond when we are called upon for assistance.
