FIRST READING: Wis. 9: 13-18 "Who can comprehend the will of God?"
Who could have understood the will of God had wisdom not been granted?
RESPONSORIAL PSALM:
Ps. 90 "O Lord, you have been our refuge from one generation to the next."
SECOND READING: Philemon 9-10, 12-17 "Receive him, not as a slave any more, but as a very dear brother."
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:
Psalm 118, 135 "Let your face shine on your servant, and teach me your laws."
GOSPEL: Lk. 14: 25-33
"Anyone who does not carry his cross and come after me cannot be my disciple."
Jesus speaks to the crowd demanding that if they want to be disciples they must carry their cross and give up all their possessions.
FOCUS: We are called constantly to renew our commitment to the Lord and free ourselves from the imprisonment of the material world. It is only by the grace of God that we can live faithful lives.
REFLECTION: "Love God with all your heart, and you've nothing to fear; death or punishment, judgement or hell; love, when it reaches its full growth, is an unfailing passport to God's presence." Thomas à Kempis
"Do as the storekeeper does with his merchandise: make a profit on every article. Suffer not the loss of the tiniest fragment of the true cross. It may only be the sting of a fly or the point of a pin that annoys you; it may be the little eccentricities of a neighbor, some unintentional slight, the insignificant loss of a penny, some little restlessness of soul, a slight physical weakness, a light pain in your limbs. Make a profit on every article as the grocer does, and you will soon be wealthy in God." St. Louis de Montfort
APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: Introduce the liturgy by stating that our conversion is an ongoing process. We are called to discipline our lives in response to the grace we receive. Without grace our spiritual lives would be impossible for as the first reading reflects, "As for your intentions, who could have heard it had you not sent the Holy Spirit."
General Intercessions-
Introduction: My sisters and brothers, we are gathered in the infinite richness of prayer. Let us ask God our Father to remove the obstacles to our path:
· For all who have dedicated themselves to the Lord, that in their poverty they find the richness of communion with the Holy Spirit;
· For peace among nations, that world leaders see the necessity of putting the value of life over material gain;
· For all those who suffer from loneliness, especially the aged, that we share the wealth of existence with them;
· For all of us gathered here, that God will teach us to use wisely the good things given to us, that we may learn to reject materialism and mover closer to God, the fountain of all blessings.
Preface: Sixth for Sundays in Ordinary Time
Eucharistic Prayer: Third
Prayers over the People: Sixth
or
Solemn Blessing: Fourth for Sundays in Ordinary Time
Faith Formation
All of us are always in need of renewal of faith. We will always depend upon God's grace for our spiritual development. Therefore our conversion is never complete.
· What did Jesus mean when he
said that we should renounce
family and friends in order to
follow him?
· What does it mean to carry one's
cross?
· What are and have been the
obstacles that keep you from a
fuller conversion?
· How does the church and the liturgy help you to overcome these impediments?
Children's Liturgy of the Word
After reading the gospel say that Jesus' message is quite shocking. Jesus often said shocking things because people need to be shocked out of their non-helpful lives into a more helpful way of living. Read the gospel again, substituting the words, "put God first" in place of the word "hate".
· Why is God more important than anyone or anything else?
